Tour No.04 "Nigiri-Basami in Ono"
Technique detail

"Nigiri-Basami"
Befor visiting his workshop, I have never paid attention to nigiri-basami. Of course my mother used to use nigiri-basami when she sewed, and I also had one in sewing box ( we learned sewing at junior high school). But I couldn't imagine how artisans made them elaborately with their souls.
After visiting his workshop, this small scissors looks completely different for me.
Fujiwara san never boasts his very skilled technique - he only says, ' I am only little bit brazen. Because I can feel I must be able to make good edges and scissors without any doubt I , I can grind the sharpest edges'.
Nigiri-basami doesn't have joit parts, and only made of an iron. Hownever, the tips of edges must be matched very precisely. We wish we can convey this difficulty with photos and descriptions.
Fujiwara san is very sedate person, just similar to the existence of nigiri-basami. Nigiri-basami is very usual small gear, which never make a personal statement . Hownever, users know the real worth - only products made by genuine artisans have excellent edges.
Fujiwara san is the artisan among artisans.
Artisan profile

He buys these iron materials, which are roughly made.

Blade part is made of carbon steel(SK-4) and the rest part is made of soft iron.

Beat with wooden hammer.

Grind with wheel.

Grinding process is most difficult process, he says. To grind the tip of blade, any slight hesitation will make scissors blunt.

After grinding he quenchs( at approx 1300F) and tempers(at approx 330F) in his small kiln.
Last process is bending. He bends very easily.

It is incredible, but two tips fit precisely. He doesn't use measure to bend - incredible!

He is checking the tip.

Always he is smiling. He is like a happy Zen Buddhist !

One advantage of nigiri-basami is that thumb and forefinger can be used with holding it. So it is very useful for sewing and embroidery.

Just fit size for palm.

If you would like to try out the edge, please cut wet tissue.
Photo is little bit different from the check method. Please clip only 0.5cm(0.2in) with tip of scissors. And please pull the scissors slowly. If the edge is sharp same as Fujiwara san's nigiri-basami, wet tissu will be cut clearly. But scissors doesn't have same quality as his, wet tisse will be torn.
